How to clean your rug
A rug can transform a room, adding warmth, comfort and style to your home. However, it also attracts dust, dirt, pet hair and spills, making regular cleaning essential if you want it to stay in great condition.
Whether you have a wool rug, synthetic runner or decorative area rug, these simple tips will help you keep it looking fresh.
1. Vacuum Little and Often
The easiest way to maintain your rug is to vacuum it regularly. This removes loose dirt before it becomes embedded in the fibres and helps prevent wear over time.
If your rug has a delicate pile or tassels, use a lower suction setting or a brush attachment to avoid causing damage.
2. Deal with Spills Immediately
Accidents happen, but acting quickly can stop a stain from setting.
Blot the spill gently with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain and push it deeper into the fibres. Once most of the liquid has been absorbed, use a suitable rug cleaner or mild detergent according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
3. Rotate Your Rug
Areas that receive lots of foot traffic can wear unevenly. Rotating your rug every few months helps distribute wear more evenly and can reduce fading caused by direct sunlight.
It’s a simple step that can extend the life of your rug.
4. Remove Pet Hair Regularly
If you have pets, their hair can quickly become trapped in rug fibres. In addition to vacuuming, a rubber brush or damp microfibre cloth can be effective at lifting stubborn pet hair before it builds up.
5. Freshen Up with Baking Soda
For lingering odours, lightly sprinkle baking soda over the rug and leave it for 15 to 30 minutes before vacuuming thoroughly. This can help neutralise smells and leave your rug feeling fresher.
Always test products on a small hidden area first and check that they’re suitable for your rug material.
6. Deep Clean When Needed
Even with regular maintenance, rugs benefit from an occasional deep clean. Depending on usage, once or twice a year is often enough for most households.
Some rugs can be cleaned with specialist products at home, while delicate or valuable rugs may require professional care to avoid shrinkage, colour loss or damage.
